Someone to Watch Over Me

Thanks to Ann and Emma for helping me with this fic.

In the early 1960’s, in the city of Milwaukee, a young man by the name of Warren "Potsie" Weber sat in his room playing his guitar. Earlier that day, the band had elected Potsie to find new songs for them to play at the dance that night. He listened to many songs ‘til one caught his ears…

The song kept repeating, over and over and over. I know. I know. Sometimes it doesn’t pay to stay, especially without love. Damn, I want… I want… I want him.

Running his hands over the keyboard, Potsie sang out with his mellow tenor.

I don't care what they say
I won't stay in a world without love

Please lock me away
And don't allow the day
Here inside, where I hide with my loneliness

So lonely, please I don’t want much… just let him be in love with me.

I don't care what they say, I won't stay
In a world without love

Birds sing out of tune
And rain clouds hide the moon
I'm OK, here I stay with my loneliness
I don't care what they say, I won't stay
In a world without love

They’re right, no one can stay in a world without love. Soon, I won’t have to. Reaching beneath his pillow, Potsie could feel the cool smooth metal. First let’s get the songs ready, tonight we play at Al’s, then I can come back. Then I can go to a world that’s nothing but love. I have to play there tonight, I have to! If only to see him once more.

So I wait, and in a while
I will see my true love smile
He may come, I know not when
When he does, I'll lose
So baby until then

I guess I will lose then, lose everything if he finds out. Lose him.

Lock me away
And don't allow the day

That’s exactly what they’d do to me.

Here inside, where I hide with my loneliness
I don't care what they say, I won't stay
In a world without love

(Please lock me away)
(And don't allow the day)
(Here inside, where I hide with my loneliness)
I don't care what they say, I won't stay
In a world without love

So I wait, and in a while
I will see my true love smile
He may come, I know not when
When he does, I'll lose
So baby until then

Lock me away
And don't allow the day
Here inside, where I hide with my loneliness
I don't care what they say, I won't stay
In a world without love

I don't care what they say, I won't stay
In a world without love (forget him)

NEVER!

Ralph Malph waved to Mrs. Weber as he ran up the stairs to Potsie’s room. Walking down the hall, he could hear Potsie singing. The low mournful tenor sang of a world without love. The sadness in Potsie’s voice struck Ralph to the core.

WHO?! Damn it, who?! No one has the right to mess with my Potsie. No one!

As he lay his hand on the door, the music stopped. The sound of sliding sheets drifted out into the hallway. A sharp click and a snap drew Ralph from his dreamings of a Potsie in bed. Pushing open the door, he sees Potsie, sitting on the edge of the bed, a large silver gun in his hand. Startled Potsie looks up and hides the gun quickly.

"Ralph, hey, I found a really neat song."

"Yeah. I heard you singing it. Potsie?"

"Yeah?"

"Who hurt you? I mean I may not be serious most of the time but someone hurt you. Who? Who can I blame for this?"

"No one, Ralph."

The two boys sat on Potsie’s bed, thinking.

"Potsie, I heard you sing, it was so sad. But ya know you aren’t the only one who lives in the world without love. It’s hard yes, but it’s worth the shot to live cause maybe that world will change and you’ll find love. I know. I love someone so much but I can never tell them. They’d hate me. That gun," Ralph patted the pillow the gun was hidden under, "doesn’t give you a chance. See ya tonight?"

"Yeah."

"Good." Ralph leaned over and kissed Potsie gently and carefully on the lips, caressing his cheek. "See ya later at Al’s"

Potsie watched as Ralph left the room and held the gun lightly in his hands.
